Dean Phillips, a Democratic congressman from Minnesota, announced on October 27, 2023, that he will challenge President Joe Biden in the 2024 Democratic presidential primary.

Phillips is considered a long shot to win the nomination, but he has said that he is running because he believes Biden is not the right person to lead the country for another four years.

In a statement announcing his candidacy, Phillips said that Biden has "failed to deliver on the promises he made to the American people." He also criticized Biden's handling of the economy, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the war in Ukraine.

"We need a new president who will fight for working families, not special interests," Phillips said. "We need a president who will restore America's leadership in the world. And we need a president who will unite the country, not divide it.

Phillips is the first Democrat to announce a challenge to Biden, who has not yet said whether he will seek re-election. However, Biden is widely expected to run, and he remains popular among Democratic voters.

It is unclear whether Phillips' challenge will gain traction among Democratic voters. However, his entry into the race could force Biden to take a more progressive stance on some issues in order to shore up support on the left.
